World Book Day Costume Ideas!

1st March is World book day! Lots of schools and places of work encourage dressing up as your favourite book characters for the day so here are some fun costume ideas to help inspire you…

Matilda (Matilda)
This one is pretty easy. All you need is a blue dress a red ribbon and, of course, you’ll need to carry around some books!

The BFG (The BFG)
This one is a little more difficult. You’ll need some baggy clothes and a brown waistcoat. As for accessories, you could cut out some big ears and join them to a headband and find a tiny doll ‘Sophie’ to put in your pocket!

James Bond (James Bond)
This is easy if you already own a smart suit! Then all you will need is some gadgets and maybe a (pretend) martini in your hand.

Rick Grimes (The Walking Dead)
This one involves a bit more effort because you’ll need a sheriff’s hat and badge, maybe a tan shirt, brown trousers plus some pretend weapons for fighting zombies!

Valkyrie  Cain (Skulduggery Pleasant)
This is a really easy costume idea as long as you have some black clothes in your wardrobe! Maybe some black jeans, a black t-shirt and a leather jacket to match and you’ll be ready to solve mysteries and fight bad guys.

Yvaine (Stardust)
Perfect if you have very blonde hair or a blonde wig! Wear a blue dress, a necklace as The Power of Stormhold and lots of glitter to make you shine like a star.

A Shadowhunter (The Mortal Instruments)
This is basically the Valkyrie costume plus some temporary rune tattoos and maybe some pretend weapons for fighting demons!

Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games)
All you need for this costume is, once again, some black clothing, a Mockingjay pin and a side braid. You could even find a tutorial online and create your own pretend bow and arrows!

Ramona Flowers (Scott Pilgrim)
This costume might involve a little more creativity if you’re feeling up to it! You’ll need to wear lots of layers including a bright wig, bright tights, studded belts and of course you’ll need a comically large hammer for fighting your evil exes. (There are lots of tutorials online to help you create the hammer!)

A Hobbit (The Hobbit)
This one is great if you’re small! You’ll need curly hair, baggy trousers, a shirt, a waistcoat and a cloak. You could also wear a ring on a necklace around your neck!

Gatsby and Daisy (The Great Gatsby)
This is great if you are dressing up with a friend! Think beaded dresses, feather headbands, tuxedos, and lots of champagne!

Effie Trinket (The Hunger Games)
This is another creative choice! To look like Effie you’ll need curly hair, large flower accessories, bright and colourful makeup and maybe a frilly dress to match!

Max (Where the Wild Things Are)
All you need for this one is a fluffy onesie and a crown!

The Baudelaire siblings (A Series of Unfortunate Events)
This would be so much fun if you are dressing up with a friend or siblings! Remember whilst the story isn’t set in any particular time period, it has similarities to the 1930s. For Violet, you could wear a black dress, long coat, and carry a purple ribbon to tie in your hair. For Klaus, a blue sweater, glasses and of course some books. As for Sunny, you could carry a doll or if you have a very young sibling you could dress them similar to Violet!

Thing 1 and Thing 2 (The Cat in the Hat)
Great for dressing up with somebody else, all you need is red clothing, bright blue wigs and ‘Thing 1’ and ‘Thing 2’ signs stuck to your chests!

Mary Poppins (Mary Poppins)
I’ll always remember when my nan turned up to my 5th birthday party dressed a Mary Poppins and I thought she was the best Poppins ever. You can give it a try too by wearing a black coat, white shirt, a black skirt and a bowler hat.  Of course, you’ll also need to carry a bag and an umbrella!

The Man in the Yellow Hat (Curious George)
For this costume, you could dress all in yellow, with a yellow hat and a toy monkey. Or if you have a friend who needs a costume, they can dress as a monkey and pretend to be Curious George!

Nancy Drew (Nancy Drew)
Think classic, sophisticated clothing and wear a simple headband. Carry a flashlight, notepad, and a magnifying glass and you’ll be ready to solve mysteries!

Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes)
If you don’t feel like being Nancy Drew, you could be Sherlock Holmes by wearing a tweed coat, matching hat, and carry a magnifying glass and fake pipe!

The White Witch (The Chronicles of Narnia)
All you need for this costume is a white dress, silver makeup, a box of Turkish delight and an icy attitude!

Hogwarts students (Harry Potter)
Great as a group or on your own, this is my go-to costume. All you need is a black skirt or trousers, a white shirt and maybe some black robes. You can show some house pride with scarves, house ties or pins. As for props, find a stick for a wand and carry some books, a pretend cauldron or a toy owl!

Madeline (Madeline)
To dress like Madeline you’ll need a short red wig, a blue coat, a yellow hat and a red scarf!

Your favourite book!
If you’re feeling really creative you could get some big sheets of cardboard, paint them to look like the cover your favourite book and create some straps so you can wear it. Even better, you could dress up like a bookworm inside the book!

Do you have any fun ideas that I haven’t listed?
