“Haters are just more people paying attention to you.”
Why Not Me? is the second book written by American writer, actress and comedian, Mindy Kaling.
Last Summer I was suffering from a really awful allergic reaction and was bedridden for about 2 months. Whilst this was obviously not the best Summer I’ve ever had it did give me the opportunity to catch up on a lot of television shows. One day I was watching sitcoms and an episode of The Mindy Project started. I’d never seen the show before then but simply watching the opening sequence had me crying with laughter. This is when I discovered my love for Mindy Kaling. For the next few weeks, I watched the show on repeat. Suddenly being ill wasn’t so bad.
Mindy Kaling is smart and perceptive. She knows what she wants from life and is not afraid to fight for it. She is also hilarious. Why Not Me? is an inspiring insight into Mindy’s very busy and pretty surreal life. The book is made up of a collection of essays written by Mindy, offering stories of love, friendship, everyday worries and having confidence in yourself.
The first thing I love about this book is the range of topics discussed. It seems that Mindy absorbs everything. She notices little things about people, their behaviour, what they are thinking. More often than not, whilst reading this book I would find myself thinking “Oh my goodness, that is so interesting!” And “Oooh I’d never even thought of that!”. It was like having a really deep, meaningful conversation with someone truly fascinating. I didn’t want the conversation to end.
Despite the number of topics covered, Why Not Me? is a relaxing read. Mindy is very optimistic. She acknowledges the lessons that can be learned when things don’t work out and sees the good in every situation. She has somehow found a way to turn all of her anxieties into hilarious essays that made me laugh out loud. This is definitely a new favourite of mine!
I recommend this book to anyone going through turning points in their life or their career. Especially is you are a fan of Mindy!
